45 Northland students attend 2009 Youth Summit

Forty-five students from 20 Northland schools gathered for a special Youth Summit at Whangarei’s Onerahi foreshore recently to discuss coastal environmental issues – and what they could do to make a difference.

The day-long workshop, organised by Northland Regional Council, is held annually and brought together Year Seven and Eight students (Form One and Two) nominated by schools from throughout Northland.

This year’s 28 October summit – the 14th hosted by the Council - was built around a coastal marine theme and investigated ways in which young people could take an active role in the sustainable management of Northland’s coast.

Regional Council staff worked with students on a variety of subjects related to coastal marine management, as well as leading students through a mock resource consent hearing.

Students attended from the following schools:

Aranga School, Arapohue School, Kaitaia Abundant Life School, Kamo Intermediate, Kokopu School, Mangakahia Area School, Matakohe School, Okaihau College, Oromahoe School, Otamatea Christian School, Parua Bay School, Pompallier College, Poroti School, Pouto School, Ruawai College, Tangiteroria School, Tangowahine School, Tikipunga High School, Whangarei Heads and Whangarei Intermediate.
