Te Tai Tokerau Regional Accessibility Strategy was developed as a shared project by the four councils of Te Tai Tokerau, together with a working group made up of Northlanders’ with access needs.
The four councils include:
- Whangarei District Council
- Kaipara District Council
- Far North District Council
- Northland Regional Council
The strategy gives Te Tai Tokerau a shared vision, values, outcomes, and actions to improve accessibility and the experiences of people with access needs. It talks about what we can do to make Te Tai Tokerau more:
- Inclusive: If something is inclusive, everyone can take part.
- Accessible: If something is accessible, everyone can use it.
The plan also serves as a strategic framework for each individual council to develop their own implementation or action plans, which will be made available on individual council websites when ready.
- A Braille Ready File (BRF) displays digital information in a tactile code using a Braille display connected to a computer or a smartphone, or using a specialised Braille note-taker.
- Audio is an AI-generated MP3 audio file that can be downloaded to play on a range of devices including computers and MP3 players.
- Large Print is a specially formatted large print version of the print document. This can be downloaded and read via your computer software or you can print the document.
- Easy Read is a way of helping people to understand written information. This includes people with learning disabilities, English language learners, those with low levels of literacy, and some deaf or older people.
- TellMe is another way to access audio especially for someone who may not be online. Or who has limited access to the internet. You access TellMe via your landline or mobile phone.
- Phone 0800 835 563 to obtain your local number.
- Or you can access TellMe via Amazon Echo Smart Speaker devices. To get started you need to enable the TellMe skill by asking Alexa to enable My Information and then follow the prompts.
- No matter which way you access TellMe, once you are at the main menu you will need to access menu 5 and then option 3, or just press 53 from the main menu.
