Tākou Bay is a māhinga mātaitai site of cultural importance to Ngāti Rēhia and the final resting place for the Mātaatua waka. Ngāti Rēhia approached Northland Regional Council about the possibility of working together to better understand the health of the Tākou Estuary. Subsequently kaitiaki from Ngāti Rēhia collected water samples each month, for one year between May 2019 and May 2020 from a site in the Tākou Estuary and a freshwater site upstream in the catchment. This report presents the results from of this monitoring project.
